Demonstrating Earth Observation Solutions for Environmental Monitoring

TERRA successfully hosts its 1st webinar
On 2 April 2026, the TERRA project successfully organised its first webinar, bringing together researchers, industry representatives, and stakeholders to explore how Earth Observation (EO) and advanced digital technologies can support environmental monitoring and decision-making.
The webinar, moderated by InCites Consulting S.A., provided an overview of the TERRA vision and showcased three pilot demonstrations addressing key environmental challenges, including water quality, coastal dynamics, and port environments.
Setting the scene: TERRA’s vision
The session opened with a presentation by Kostas Kolomvatsos (University of Thessaly), TERRA’s Coordinator, who introduced the project’s approach to integrating Copernicus services with Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and intelligent Digital Twins. The project aims to deliver advanced tools for monitoring environmental changes, improving forecasting capabilities, and supporting more informed policy and operational decisions.
Demonstrating real-world applications
A key part of the webinar focused on three pilot demonstrations:
- Water contamination and the water cycle
Presented by Panagiotis Oikonomou (University of Thessaly), this demonstration explored methods for assessing water quality in coastal areas. By combining EO data with advanced modelling techniques, the solution supports better understanding of pollution patterns and their evolution over time. - Environmental monitoring around seaports
Krzysztof (Chris) Kanawka (Blue Dot Solutions) presented approaches for monitoring environmental conditions in port areas, highlighting how EO data can be used to assess activity, evaluate environmental impact, and support more sustainable port operations. - Digital Twin for coastal change monitoring
Ke Xiao (University of Glasgow) introduced a Digital Twin approach for tracking and predicting coastline changes using satellite data. This solution enables continuous monitoring and supports early identification of erosion risks and long-term coastal trends.
The webinar attracted a diverse audience, including researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders, and provided space for discussion and exchange following the presentations.
This first webinar marks an important step in TERRA’s outreach activities, contributing to knowledge sharing and community building around EO-based environmental services. Further events, including workshops and webinars, are planned to engage stakeholders and promote the uptake of TERRA results.
